Hello gamer, and welcome to yet another gaming monitor review. Today we’re looking at a real game changer the Dell Alienware AW3423DW. This is a 34-incH, 3440x1440p QD-OLED gaming monitor with some really impressive features. It has a maximum refresh rate of 175Hz and a response time 1ms. This makes it perfect for fast paced games where accuracy is an added advantage. This is the first OLED gaming monitor with this exact specs.
QD Technology is a technology developed by Samsung that is really changing the way we enjoy content and Play games. The QD-OLED display utilizes multiple layers for better brightness, richer colors and to prevent burn-in. Basically, QD-OLED technology utilizes self-lit organic LED pixels, similar to other OLED displays.
The Dell Alienware AW3423DW is mainly focused on gaming. Especially, HDR gaming. It comes with an NVIDIA G-SYNC Ultimate hardware module that works with GPU from both AMD and Intel. In addition, this monitor is VESA Display HDR TrueBlack 400 certified, which is way better than the regular display HDR 400. The OLED technology means that we get True HDR hardware, and Dell claims a maximum of 1000nits of peak brightness.
In this article, I’m going to share my first impressions of the monitor, my gaming experience with the monitor, and my honest thoughts about this monitor.
Let’s get straight into it.
The Dell Alienware AW3423DW QD-OLED HDR Gaming Monitor Review
Build and Design
The build quality is quite impressive. The AW3423WD features a very sleek, futuristic, clean design and aesthetic design. This is a large monitor. Not just the screen but also the general housing of the monitor. It features a 1800R curved monitor like most 34-inch curved gaming monitors.
The monitor is fat at the middle, to house all the associated G-SYNC hardware, and it comes with a large, strong stand. The stand supports height adjustment, up and down. It also supports tilt and swivel. You can also swipe out the stand for a better mounting adapter.
Similar to something like the Samsung Odyssey, we have some RGB lighting at the back of this monitor. This light produces a nice glow onto the wall behind the monitor. It also improves the aesthetics of the monitor when it’s not placed up against the wall.
The outer material is plastic but this is a very well-built monitor overall, and it feels high quality. We also have some vents at the back of the monitor. This are meant to improve airflow and cool the monitor as much as possible.
Ports
At the back of this monitor we have two HDMI 2.0 ports, a Display Port 1.4 and two USB Ports. You also get two more USB 3.2 Ports and a head phone jack at the bottom of the monitor.
The Display Port 1.4 is capable of a maximum refresh rate of 175Hz. However, at 175Hz, you’re only limited to 8-bit. For 10-bit, you have to reduce the refresh rate to 144Hz.
We don’t get HDMI 2.1 support for this monitor, which is a bit of a bummer. HDMI 2.0 limits the display to just 100Hz refresh rate. This is a bit disappointing for this kind of monitor.
Other Features
The OSD is really easy to navigate, thanks to a directional toggle. You can use the OSD to adjust all the usual color and gaming features.
My Gaming Experience
Games run smoothly with almost zero lag and the colors are rich and vibrant. Even though this is an ultrawide monitor, the 1800R curve greatly reduces eye strain by bringing the edges of the monitor closer to your eyes field of view. This also means that you don’t move your neck around as much. I feel like gaming on a monitor like this in a competition would be advantageous due to the wider field of view high refresh rates and low response times.

Price
Despite having the specs to destroy much more expensive monitors, the Alienware AW3423DW has a very competitive price of (US)$1300. This is still a bit more expensive than most 34-inch gaming monitors in the market. However, as far as high-end displays go, the AW3423DW is significantly cheaper than other True HDR products like the ASUS ROG Swift PG32UQX which comes in at around (US)$3000.
Drawbacks
I only two major issues with the Dell Alienware AW3423DW QD-OLED HDR Gaming Monitor.
Fan Noise
Because of the G-SYNC module, this monitor requires active cooling. This means that the fans in the AW3423DW runs all the time. I found that the fans are audible in a quiet room. You’ll not hear them when gaming with your regular gaming audio. However, in a quiet room, the monitor noise is got louder, even than my PC. Fan Speeds also vary from time to time. Giving you louder and quieter fan noises. I honestly wish this monitor was quieter.
The Display’s coating
The Alienware AW3423DW reflects quite a lot of ambient light. This is probably due to the coating of the display, and the polarization layers. Most of the monitors that we test here, fall into two main categories;
- Most use a standard, matte, anti-glare finish. This prevents mirror-like reflections but does little to deflect reflection of ambient light.
- The others use a glossy finish. E.g. The LG C1 OLED. This limits a heap of ambient light reflections, that can cause mirror like reflections for objects directly in front of the display.
The AW3423DW uses what Dell is calling an Anti-Reflective coating.
Verdict
The Dell Alienware AW3423WD Gaming Monitor is a solid monitor. Especially for gaming. The high refresh rate, low response time and G-SYNC compatibility make this monitor a force to recon with. I was really impressed by this monitor and I’m glad to see that the bar has been set so high. It’s also important to note that it comes with a 3-Year warranty, which is awesome.
This is definitely one of my favorite gaming monitors of 2022. Easily recommendable.
I hope you found this article helpful. Let me know what you think about this monitor. Would you buy it? Or do you already have one? How has your experience been?
Thanks a lot for you time. See you in the next One. 😉😊
