Unofficially dubbed “the Apple Oscars”, Apple held a special press event to award and announce ‘The Best Apple Apps and Games of 2023. However, They did not explicitly explain the criteria used to select the winners apart from stating grandly that “Apps help simplify our lives and express our creativity, connect us to friends, family, and the world beyond and of course, have fun. In 2019, apps made their mark by reflecting the zeitgeist of our society and sitting at the nexus of digital and pop culture.”
However, it’s clear that the awards come from editorial picks and sales performance. They also released charts of the most downloaded apps and most downloaded games. Here are the winners:
Best Apple Apps and Games of 2021
iPhone App of the Year – Spectre Camera (Lux Optics)
This is an AI-Powered app that leverages a reasonable amount of tech to make it easy to take fabulous long-exposure photos. Instead of holding the shutter open, it shoots hundreds of exposures over your chosen period of time and then blends them together.
iPhone Game of the Year – Sky: Children of the Light (thatgamecompay)
In this social quest, you will fly across sweeping landscapes, helping celestial beings find their way back to the heavens. You run, slide and fly through a diversity of kingdoms, each with a different style and feel. You also meet other players and interact and explore the world with them. It has gorgeous graphics and the loveliest, most perfectly crafted audio experience in a mobile game.
iPad App of the Year – Flow by Moleskine
Using graphite pencils, chisel-tipped markers and more, that are meticulously tuned to mimic the real thing, you can sketch and draw in this stylish digital notebook app. Choose from a range of paper types including dotted and lined, and a set of realistic brushes and pens in a variety of colors. “Realistic” is what this app is all about. It’s a wonderful drawing app that’s amazing with Apple Pencil.
Mac App of the Year – Affinity Publisher (Serif Labs)
This app makes pro-level design accessible to everyone whether you’re creating a flyer for your company’s products or services or a photo-rich restaurant menu. “Minor glitches and omissions are inevitable in an app this ambitious, but it’s streets ahead of any other DTP contender, and absolute bargain.”-Mac Life verdict (issue 158)
Mac Game of the Year – GRIS (Devolved/Nomada Studio)
This is a spectacularly satisfying puzzle platformer that is a soul-stirring work of art. It explores the hope, grief and triumph of putting a life back together after a tragic loss.
